Making Beds In
A Burning House Lyrics
14,ooo Things to Be Happy About
Tell your mom, you're not coming home tonight. You've got your youth,
your will, and you're willing to fight. And no conscience, could keep
your heart in one piece, there's passion to be found, there's stress,
there's release.
So, into the open air to soak it all in and live your life like the
world owes you something more than, what you have. Like a one way ticket
or any free ride, a brand new box to put your head inside. Or a neat,
new monument, with your name etched in. A home to call your own, new
problem-free willingly withdraw from certainty and lack of sleep on
the pure and peaceful path, of stupidity. Growing gets hard, waiting
gets old to you. I know, that feeling's no fun, it feels like you're
out, down and done too.
Oh grow up, when will you ever learn? When will you learn, that candle
in the window is going to be the reason your whole house burns. And
the money... It's a carrot on a string. There's a horse standing over
a black hole basement after losing everything. But your car, you know,
it runs like a dream, and your hair and skin are so fucking clean. Everyone
looks at you, like you're an angel or something. But we'll take the
fake happy over knowing what's wrong and we'll give you the stuff that
you need to belong, and hope that's what you need, by a small chance.
A quick and heavy dose of acceptance. Growing gets hard, time is running
out. You'll die, a young and exciting death and tell us all in your
last breath, I'm done there's nothing to be happy about.
And we dance, and the flowers come up through the footstep floor mat.
And now's your chance, to seize this all, you seize this all, while
you're smile hides what's beneath keeps the sadness a secret as we grow
old, and take it all with us. Now, I know, there's mistakes that go
along with youth, so choose, to replace or take them with you and I
feel so bad now that I'm so old, so angry, so broke so unhappy, tattooed
and ugly.
Safe and Sound
And I won't sleep with socks on, I'm
scared I might dream. And I won't set my alarm clock, I'm scared of its
scream. And did you know that sleeping in peace, is a condition of the
weak? I rest aggressively and restlessly and only in 3's.
Dreams pass straight through my head and out my feet. Into the dead space
of my home, between walls and under beds. Where it's fast and safe and
sound asleep and unaware of any threat. And did you know that inspiration
strikes at 3am? I'm blessed, I'm cursed, I write it down before I fall
asleep again. Dreams pass straight through my head and out my feet.
In the middle of the night, I'm floating outside at the edge of my driveway,
I'm glowing in the moonlight and I'm thinking about my neighbors all asleep
in the same way, atop a second story staircase, in the distance there's
a train saying; travels can be made by the sleeping or awake, and your
medicine will help clear the fear from your veins, and your bones no longer
ache, your walls no longer cave... breathing gets deeper when your bodies
are safe.
Bees
Well your brother's a liar, and your sister's
a faker. And someday they'll be home wrecker and maker, in neighborhoods
of dreams, with crime fighting teams. Recycling those cars that end up
on their lawns and don't you forget the image in your retina, to foresee
the future, to find a use for... Them telling me, everything that would
happen to me anyway.
If it isn't science, it doesn't exist, we make our own problems and blame
them on birds and bees but we ain't seen nothing yet, and don't you ever
forget it.
Well your mom was the queen, and dad was the farmer, now we're all covered
in aerosol armor, singing God's out to get us with his army of wings,
Mother Nature's militia of precision stings and those petals in your pockets,
mosquitoes will swarm, to foresee the future, before it takes form.
Please tell me, every sting to hit me in this heat wave. Please tell me,
everything that would happen to me anyway...
If it isn't fire it doesn't exist, we've all come to burn and learned
to love it, better answer your heart before it blows apart. And don't
you ever forget it. Please tell me everything that would happen to me
anyway.
I'm Pretty Sure I Can See Molecules
I see molecules and I see you, I see
the way that matter scatters out and makes things move. I see the backs
of my eyelids have never looked so beautiful, there's shapes and light
with eyes so tight and swirling little pixels. It's a funny seeming, fuzzy
feeling to think about all I'm seeing, all that is, birds and fish, plants
and apes and annelids. Traffic smoke and atmosphere, it's a one way ticket
out of here, it's a science you can trust, it's a molecule and it's here
with us.
Finally I'm right, Finally you're wrong, I've seen molecules all along.
To be young and dumb and innocent, to fear your life and want to live,
to sleep and wake naturally, to treat your brain how it's supposed to
be. One with nature, two for tea, three's a crowd and all for me, to walk
the plank, find the shark, underwater, in the dark. The air we breathe,
it comes from trees, not carried by air and sky, but is the breeze. Chlorophyll
and bits of rice, ice cold water and warmed up ice, fish eat plankton
and plankton is, molecules as food for fish.
Finally I'm right, Finally you're wrong, I've seen molecules, all along.
I see molecules and I see you, I see friends in stars and faces in moons,
and I see molecules I see light I see colors and shapes in the middle
of the night. And finally I'm right, finally you're wrong, finally I dance
with confidence to songs, that sing of hope and love and truth, when you're
nothing, you're still something, you're molecules.
To Be Alive and Alone
It's nice to see you, back in the game,
back playing the field, back to your old ways.
We don't want love we just want to be touched. Some just touch while others
want love. Relationships are way too much, don't give me your heart because
I've had enough.
It's hopeful to know you are there for me, as a friend with benefits,
or a friend in need. Love is happiness and happiness is free. It's a lie
that we're told and try to believe. God is love and Love is the Devil.
What is your type, you say I've got several... It's a great time to be
alive.
There's a hole in my soul that will never complete, just waiting for someone
to marry me. Broken hearts are overrated, you died alone because you've
waited. It's a great time to be alive and alone.
Even Marathon Runners Need to Nap
Even marathon runners need to nap, he
said he'd have a heart attack if he didn't lay down. The years went by
he settled down, his house is on the edge of town and you're so proud.
You never bit off more than you could chew. You never gave out more than
inconveniences you. In olden days he made enough to build a car that runs
on dust, but it ran out. Now we've got oceanic hydroponics bringing back
the great relax from way back when. Do you think this will last? Of course!
How do you really know? We'll use force. Even marathon runners need to
nap, I ran all the way there and then ran back and back was gone. Defenestrate
my old ways, grand canyon all the lovely days and then dive in. Oh, that's
my dad in the yellow shirt, he won the race and then the girl and they
made me. Ineffable is life and death, let's talk till we run out of breath,
or just run along... Just run along.
Ear, Nose & Throat
Airway. Chemical. Think it through. Sudafed.
Theraflu. Hotel Chain. Airborne. Self-Contained. Underwater. Gill filled.
Oxygen. Claritin. Feeling sorta stuffy at the Red Roof Inn. Because a
Heat vent. Sudafed. Prevent. Righteousness. Who will help me and my kids?
With their medicine. Monitor. Bacteria. Doctor. Sit back and watch all
the money roll in through a...Stethoscope, Aerosol. Circulate. American.
Common Cold. Often told. Often tricked. Often fooled. T.V. scams a plenty.
If only the needs of the many outweighed the few. Are we lied to? Can
we find trust in our evening news? Who will tell me what to choose, what's
good for me and my family?
Double Shift. Patriot. Aerosmith. Eat the rich. Eat yourself. Eat your
dreams. Take one for the winning team Drain your face. In every room.
In every state. Concentrate. The liquid of life is not blood. In a five
diamond. Super 8. Better never. Better late. Continental breakfast. Business
suit. Break neck. Break dance. Break down. There's laughter in the White
House. And the streets are alive with things you may not like. Like me.
Like them. Disease. And Pathogens. Blood born. Well worn. Wear gloves.
When push comes. Don't shove. Just step aside and let the powerful men
pass by. Are we lied to? Can we find trust in our evening news? Who will
tell me what to choose, what's good for me and my family? Oh Canada! Otolaryngology
ain't right for me, if it's not free. Wealthy Equals Healthy.
Floribraska
In a Pontiac 600 on a Florida side street.
There's no place like the Midwest, except the Southeast. When the clouds
hang low on a vacant beach and the roads stretch on, endlessly. And the
great facade of the Holiday Inn is windowless at 3am, we're on camera,
we're careless for once and we'll be damned if we're not having fun, we're
on radar. We're not very far from an ocean breeze or a field of dreams,
and no one is getting any sleep.
Just as the bluffs are hills the gulf's a sea, the sky's the limit we
meet. Horizons on the palms and leaves, the waves reflect the blues and
greens.. Sink or swim, drive or die, find a coast, stay alive. A Northern
source will feed us now, but we'll all end up at the river's mouth.
You know what they say about passing ships? They're old ladies, in leopard
print. Who've lived their lives, with telescopes. Who've made mistakes,
but are now too old.
The Do The
Build The House
There's a home, there's a hell up in
the hills, there's a private drive to dreams fulfilled and a fence and
a fence keeps bad away, separating the predators from the prey. There's
a system of wires and drains and tubes, one million means and ways things
can reach you, there's a friend and a neighbor just down the street, there's
a way to make you feel complete. There's a sense of fear you can't ignore,
not a flood or a fire or a thunder storm, but a beast that lives out in
the trees, the more we cut the closer he comes to being released. There's
a church where your parents pray to God, they swear the stained glass
home is all they've got. They've got they've got to feel secure and do
their part to keep this poor world pure. Let's build a stadium with a
cross on the roof. Some black magic, packed arenas are the proof. Acres
and acres of faith filled parking lots, we were told we have read this
is what he wants.
Building a house cut a hole in the Earth now. Turn it all out, you're
doing superb now. Framing's a game you can play it's a dance now. My heart
spins where this home is, the home is where the heart will live and die
we can't build out, so we build up now everyone lives in the sky.
Burn the prairie, build the church. God will love, your hard work. The
deer that flees, in fear of the crane. Destruction is beautiful when it's
done in His name.
Get Lost
Well what we have here is you and me
and we're not going to give up that easy. Where will you go when this
day is over? I don't know. There is so much anger behind your beauty,
there is so much beauty behind your anger and what comes out is like bloody
feet on a sandy beach in my favorite season.
Know that, you and I will one day, one day get lost.
Are things the way you want them to be? No, they aren't and they never
are it seems. I'm on the phone you're on the moon, we're in each other's
bedroom but this can't go on this can't exist when you've got two hearts
that won't want to live with the other one, get out of here now, you can
do it. Escape and face your fear. Get lost. Fight the freeze, cut down
trees, in your cities of conformities. If I cooperate with my nerve, if
I cooperate with the traffic officer, if I cooperate with the roads, I'll
never get lost.
Jackpot Stampede
Deluxe
There was a stampede into a casino that
we went to. Familiar ringing like money was singing. There were old ladies
laughing, and fat men dancing, so we took our chances and joined in the
madness. Then a cocktail waitress, spelled out our fate for us, you can
stay and drink as long as you'd like. But don't you forget to return to
your jobs, I don't work these hours cuz I beat the odds. Oh! Life is so
rough, money can talk but it never says enough, and I've had enough.
There was a jackpot on the last slot and hearts sank all across the sea
of hopeful losers like me. In the sad hue of the red light on an empty-wallet
kind of night, she was the only thing keeping me alive. And I bet her
birthday, and we were both sure that our luck was changing as black bars
lined up. Oh cover me in green felt, I'll deal with all I'm dealt and
we'll keep each other safe from the sharks that surround us here. Oh,
life is so rough, money can talk but it never says enough and we've had
enough. Oh, to win big just once. I swear I know that it would be enough
and we've had enough.
Later that evening the fountains were freezing, the cold wind was stinging
my sunburned neck. From days of walking and jaws dropping at canyons and
copters that flew around our heads. Las Vegas, last places, lost energy
converges, from outer desert spaces like gasses escaping through holes
in our layers, are there holes in our prayers when we pray for ourselves
before others?
